Daihatsu Charade

The Daihatsu Charade is a compact hatchback from the 1980s and early 1990s that was positioned as a lightweight, fuel-efficient city car. It came in several variants: the entry-level CL 1.0 with a basic three-cylinder engine, the better-equipped CX 1.0, the CX Turbo which added forced induction to the small 1.0L unit for noticeably more pull, the sporty GT-ti with a twin-cam setup, and the 1.3 Kissa which offered a slightly larger engine for a more relaxed driving character. Given their age, expect city fuel economy in the 10-14 km/l range depending on engine condition and how well the car has been maintained over the decades.

In Pakistan, the Charade was never officially assembled locally, so parts sourcing is the biggest challenge. Mechanical spares can be found in Karachi and Lahore's used-parts markets, but availability is inconsistent. Local mechanics familiar with these cars are becoming rarer. At this age, buyers should budget for timing belt replacement, suspension bushings, carburetor rebuilding, and AC system overhaul as standard items. Resale is niche — these sell slowly and to enthusiasts rather than the general market.

The Charade suits a buyer who wants a lightweight classic hatchback for occasional use or restoration, not daily commuting. The GT-ti and CX Turbo appeal to enthusiasts specifically. The honest limitation is that parts scarcity makes long-term ownership genuinely difficult without patience and a good parts contact.
