Diesel Drops Rs 32, Petrol Holds Steady

The government has cut diesel by 8.3% effective April 18 — welcome relief for the transport sector, though petrol users will see no change this fortnight.

OGRA has notified new petroleum prices effective midnight April 18, 2026. The headline story is a sharp Rs 32.11 per litre reduction in high-speed diesel — the main fuel for trucks, buses, and farm equipment — while petrol, kerosene, and light diesel oil have all been held at their current rates.

Why Diesel Matters More Than Petrol

While a diesel-only cut might feel underwhelming for car owners, it's arguably the more impactful reduction for the broader economy. Diesel powers nearly every truck, bus, and tractor in Pakistan — which means its price feeds directly into the cost of everything that moves by road.

With HSD now at Rs 353.43, down from the crisis peak of Rs 520.35 on April 3, transporters have seen their fuel costs drop by over Rs 167 per litre in just two weeks. Expect this to ease pressure on food prices in the coming weeks, particularly vegetables, dairy, and wheat-flour products that rely heavily on inter-city freight.

What About Petrol?

Petrol stays at Rs 366.58 per litre for the third fortnight running. That's still Rs 91.83 below the April 3 peak of Rs 458.41, but roughly Rs 100 above pre-crisis levels from February. For daily commuters and motorcycle riders, the relief is real but incomplete — and the motorcycle subsidy scheme (Rs 100/L off, up to 20 litres/month via CNIC verification) remains in effect.

Good Window for Buyers

Diesel's continued drop makes diesel SUVs and pickups meaningfully more affordable to run than they were two weeks ago — Fortuner, Revo, and Hilux buyers who paused their search during the crisis now have a much clearer cost picture. Equally, fuel-efficient hybrids and 1000cc hatchbacks continue to see strong demand from buyers prioritising low running costs.
